You've probably seen these scooters all across Charlotte.
In the past couple of months, motorized scooters have be popping up all over Charlotte. These rent-based bikes charge small fees to ride them around, definitely an alluring alternative to walking around in the summer heat. And multiple companies have jumped on the trend – Limebike and Bird specifically here in Charlotte.
Unfortunately, I had yet to ride one. That is, until I saw one after a shoot one day and decided today was the day. Thankfully, Producer Patrick Bennett was on hand to help film the experience.
The one we specifically tested was the Bird scooter. Our Digital Marketing Manager Matt Chandler had sent me a free ride code to redeem, so this test session was no charge! There are quite a few instructions you have to go through before you can actually get to the riding portion. The Bird app went through all the laws and requirements as well as best tips. After about 10 minutes, it was ride time.
Turns out, you can’t just accelerate on the scooter. You have to give it a running start Fred Flintstone style. Their advice is three kicks then flip the switch. Let’s just say I was pretty unprepared for how touchy the gas was. It accelerates, that’s for sure. And the brake is also pretty touchy, so try to not slam on it and throw yourself off.
The only thing I found really challenging was turning… but maybe that was just my fear of falling off kicking in.
All in all, it was pretty fun! I enjoyed it and could really see myself using these on days when I want to stay in my neighborhood and not worry about parking in Elizabeth or Plaza Midwood.
10/10 would ride again
