It’s hard to miss the mural on Commonwealth Avenue that boasts giant bananas, grapes, kiwis and other fruits, not to mention a big blender and some hip-looking monkeys. The new smoothie shop Smooth Monkey is getting ready to move into that building at 1801 Commonwealth Avenue with the mural, painted by local artist Ashley Graham. The Peculiar Rabbit, The Rabbit Hole and Jackalope Jacks will be neighbors to the shop.
The four partners behind the concept — along with Emmelie Andersson as general manager — wanted to bring a locally owned and operated smoothie and açaí spot with a community focus to Plaza Midwood.
That’s why 5 percent of profits will be donated to local causes that will rotate on a monthly basis. They will also be looking for input for menu updates (like smoothie of the month) and future causes to support. Plaza Midwood community members actually already chimed in to determine the company’s logo — which features the face of a monkey.
As for the emphasis on monkeys, the partners thought it was a cool character to build around for merchandise and menu creations, with a whimsical approach that fit the eclectic neighborhood.
