These Hand-Cut Maps Can Take 80 Hours to Create

Karen O'Leary has created these delicate and minimalist pieces of art for 10 years.

When it comes to delicate and minimalist artwork, Studio KMO owner Karen O’Leary has taken a unique approach.

Ten years ago, she was a project architect in New York City. But her unusual approach to maps has become a full-fledged business. Now, she operates Studio KMO out of her Charlotte home. O’Leary’s artwork includes hand-cut, to-scale maps, line based maps and letterpress prints.

For hand-cut pieces, she could spent anywhere from six to eight hours on smaller pieces all the way up to 80 hours for larger pieces. For those looking for a more affordable option, her letterpress prints offer some of her most popular maps in multiple colors.
